September Meeting Reminder - AGM & Presentation 11/9/12

A reminder that our Monthly Meeting is on tomorrow night 11th September. We are having a presentation about the history of the MTAS and a lucky door prize of a ticket on the next FOHacRG bus trip down to Canberra on 13th Oct to see Sydney Nolan Exhib and Floriad will be awarded from those who attend.

It is also our Annual General Meeting and all positions for committee will be declared vacant. The committee has had a few members drop this last few months due to personal reasons so we now find that there are some positions that we really do need a new person to step up and give us a hand so that we can keep the Art Society going. Such positions as Publicity Officer and Assistant Secretary are especially needing to be filled.

We won’t have an Art Society without the help of all our members, so please consider volunteering your time so that it’s not all left up to a few. Not all positions need to attend committee meetings and even if you can’t commit a lot of time there is always ways that you can help in the smaller positions such as Field Day Organiser or some of the assistant roles.

We are also reviewing the positions that we have on offer. This AGM we need to fill the following positions (new positions are in Italics):

President
Vice President 1
Vice President 2
Secretary
Assistant Secretary
Treasurer
Assistant Treasurer
Publicity Officer
Functions Officer (organises the demonstrators for meetings and workshops)
Field Day Organiser
* Exhibition Manager
* Exhibition Equipment Manager
Newsletter Editor
Children’s Art Co-Ordinator
Meetings Supper Organiser
* Catering Supper Exhibitions
* Functions RSA
Public Officer
* CASS Representative
* Librarian
* Open Day Organiser 1
* Open Day Organiser 2
* Open Day Organiser 3

(*These positions are not needed at all committee meetings)

As you can see there is quite a lot to be done to keep the Society running… so we look forward to seeing you there tomorrow night to offer your support & view our lovely presentation of MTAS over the last 50 years. The meeting will start at 7.30pm at the Deerubbin Center, George St, Windsor, as usual, with supper supplied. There is no entry Fee this month for our AGM.

Please contact Narelle for any questions about positions or the meeting 02 4565 9222.

Monthly Demonstration Meeting 14th Aug – Joe Cartwright

This month for our Demonstration meeting on Tuesday 14th of August we are pleased to welcome back Joe Cartwright with his wonderful watercolours.

Joe Cartwright’s watercolour paintings have a fluid spontaneity to them. He captures mood and atmosphere, painting with a style that draws the viewer closer to the work.
Joe’s paintings cover a wide range of subjects across landscapes, town life, flowers, portraits and figures. He prefers the freedom of exploring a variety of themes rather than a single focus, to allow room for expression, and the potential for any inspiration to lead to an exciting work of art.

After ten years of creative nigglings, Joe started painting in 1998. Today he paints prolifically and runs weekly watercolour lessons at the Nepean Art Society in Penrith, where he encourages his students to "enjoy the journey" as they learn from every painting they attempt: “there are no failures”. Every point in the painting process is an opportunity to learn and to have fun with experimentation, texture, colour and observation.

Joe is always looking for an interesting viewpoint, and sees his work as an opportunity to bring something new, undiscovered or unexpected to his audience, connecting people more closely with the world around them. “I think artists are able to show people something they have not seen or noticed”.
He explains, “I believe we see the world with more intensity through active observation.”

Recognition for Joe’s work has come both in the form of students wanting to learn his craft, as well as prizes and inclusion in exhibitions, including the John Copes Watercolour Prize in 2009, and the annual Australian Watercolour Institute Exhibition. He has also had articles about his work published in the Australian Artist Magazine and his work is represented in private collections in Australia and overseas.

For now, Joe’s greatest achievements are realised when his creativity manifests in the form of beautiful, atmospheric watercolours, bringing viewers in, and heightening their connection with the world.
Making that connection, and sharing it by teaching his craft to interested students - encouraging both the passion and technical know-how - keeps Joe’s artistic world turning.

Check out Joe’s website at http://www.joecartwright.com.au/

MTAS 10th July Demo meeting Angelika Erbsland

MTAS are proud to welcome Angelika Erbsland for our demonstartion meeting this month.

About Angelika

Angelika's artistic journey began as a very young child, and it is still a passionate journey. German born, Angelika grew up in Australia. After studying for an associate diploma in Art and Craft at TAFE in Adelaide in 1983, began teaching painting, drawing and ceramics at TAFE in Adelaide. As well as conducting private classes.

Angelica established mainly as a portrait artist, but also had several solo and group shows there before moving to Sydney in 1995. Painting many prominent people, including Dame Roma Mitchell, politicians and jockeys, and famous race horses. It was a portrait of Colin Hayes the horse trainer, with his favourite horse that won the Packer’s award at the Archibald Exhibition in 1993. That painting is now hanging in Lindsay Park.

Angelika likes to travel and paint in different environments, and sometimes will simply be inspired by music or an emotion that she wishes to express.
Because Angelika's background is in portraiture and life drawing, often the landscape impressions will meld with figures and faces, layering images to give meaning to a painting.

Colour is important, believing it influences our lives on many levels Angelika has studied colour in many ways over the years and this allows her to work intuitively with colour and the concepts of yin and yang, which are echoed in the strong relationship contrasting in her work.

Constantly exploring watercolours, pastels, oils, acrylics and mixed media, and enjoying them all, exhibiting regularly in Sydney as well as in Adelaide. Angelika's work has been featured in the Artist’s Palette magazine. Having won over 50 prizes in various art shows since 1983, 21 of these were 1st prizes, including the Packer’s award at the Archibald in 1993.

Angelika began teaching at the Castle Hill Art Society in 1997, and likes to introduce various media to her students.

Angelika still enjoys doing figurative work and drawing but also likes to move toward abstraction from time to time, and my travels have provided me with inspiration for landscape and other subjects. Living and working in Sydney, and also having a retreat with studio at Hill End, Angelika finds the area inspirational for painting as well as having an annual workshop there.

With regular workshops and demonstrations in and around Sydney as well as interstate and overseas, Angelika also takes portrait and other commissions.

For more, you can have a look at Angelika's website www.angelikaerbsland.com

Everyone is welcome to join us for this special evening with Angelika demonstrating, as well as the opportunity to enjoy networking with like-minded art enthusiasts.

MTAS June Demo Meeting 12th June

We are pleased to welcome Leanne Jones back as our demonstrator for our June Monthly meeting, Tuesday 12th 2012. Leanne will be doing a demonstration for mixed media and will have some great creative techniques to show us all.

Leanne was born in Sydney and from early childhood she has been fascinated by Watercolour after she received a gift of a set of Watercolours for her 6th Birthday. After leaving school Leanne studied Advertising at East Sydney Technical College - National Art School.

Leanne's earlier artistic persuit was ceramics and she became a talented potter and she sold her work through several local galleries in the Blue Mountains and the Hawkesbury.

Twenty six years ago, Leanne and her family moved to the Hawkesbury, and it was here that her desire to rekindle her love of Watercolour took hold.

Leanne paints watercolour on a wide variety of supports – handmade paper, watercolour canvas and Yupo paper. Travelling inspires Leanne in her search for fresh subject matter and she enjoys painting en plein air with a group of local artists and she finds the environment she lives in particularly inspiring.
Leanne displays and sells her work in her studio/gallery, which is located in the Hawkesbury Highlands, on the escarpment of the Blue Mountains, overlooking the Hawkesbury with stunning views to Sydney.  Her studio is open to the public, last Sunday of the month between 10.00am and 3.30pm or ring to confirm other times.  She holds an open studio weekend in March and August each year and exhibits her work, locally, regionally and in Sydney.

She exhibits her work widely and has won numerous awards for her watercolours and was a finalist at the 2008, 2009, 2010 Art of Sydney Awards at Darling Harbour.  Her paintings are held in private collections in Australia, United Kingdom and the USA and her most recent exhibition, was in 2008/2009 at Sassafras Creek Gallery at Kurrajong, NSW and she recently had the good fortune to become a published Artist with a featured article on Watercolour painting in Artists Palette Magazine Issue 85.

Leanne is an exhibiting member of Macquarie Towns Arts Society, Friends of the Hawkesbury Art Collection and Regional Gallery and she is a founding member and current President of the Hawkesbury Artists and Artisans Trail. (www.haat.com.au)

MTAS Monthly Meeting & Demo 7.30pm 10th April

Macquarie Towns Arts Society are very excited to be featuring Greg Hansell as our April art demonstrator on Tuesday evening 10th April.

http://www.royalart.com.au/artschool/tch/hansell.htm

Greg Hansell FRAS is well known nationally acclaimed local artist & is a member of the Royal Art society of NSW. Greg's exquisite works depict history of Australian rural landscape and sheds.
He often paints old sheds, including close-ups of the corrugated iron, because he sees the history of a shed in every dent and mark. “I’m the second son of a farmer, so I didn’t get the farm, but I grew up with sheds,” he said. Hansell’s paintings of rural landscapes, sheds and farm related items are produced from his own hand made pastels.

Hansell is currently a fellow of the RAS NSW, a council member and director of the society’s art school. He has been a finalist more than 20 times in the Archibald and Wynne Prizes. Hansell lives in Windsor. Not surprisingly, his studio is an old shed, a former hayshed which dates back to the 1890s.
“Some people suggested I tear it down so I could get a view of the river, but it makes a wonderful studio,” he said.

Macquarie Towns Art Society has been active in the Hawkesbury area for many years. New memberships with the society are always welcome.  For further details please contact Narelle on 4565 9222.

He paints landscapes and portraits using oil and watercolours with a simple palette of colours.
