Monthly Demonstration Meeting 14th Aug – Joe Cartwright

This month for our Demonstration meeting on Tuesday 14th of August we are pleased to welcome back Joe Cartwright with his wonderful watercolours.

Joe Cartwright’s watercolour paintings have a fluid spontaneity to them. He captures mood and atmosphere, painting with a style that draws the viewer closer to the work.
Joe’s paintings cover a wide range of subjects across landscapes, town life, flowers, portraits and figures. He prefers the freedom of exploring a variety of themes rather than a single focus, to allow room for expression, and the potential for any inspiration to lead to an exciting work of art.

After ten years of creative nigglings, Joe started painting in 1998. Today he paints prolifically and runs weekly watercolour lessons at the Nepean Art Society in Penrith, where he encourages his students to "enjoy the journey" as they learn from every painting they attempt: “there are no failures”. Every point in the painting process is an opportunity to learn and to have fun with experimentation, texture, colour and observation.

Joe is always looking for an interesting viewpoint, and sees his work as an opportunity to bring something new, undiscovered or unexpected to his audience, connecting people more closely with the world around them. “I think artists are able to show people something they have not seen or noticed”.
He explains, “I believe we see the world with more intensity through active observation.”

Recognition for Joe’s work has come both in the form of students wanting to learn his craft, as well as prizes and inclusion in exhibitions, including the John Copes Watercolour Prize in 2009, and the annual Australian Watercolour Institute Exhibition. He has also had articles about his work published in the Australian Artist Magazine and his work is represented in private collections in Australia and overseas.

For now, Joe’s greatest achievements are realised when his creativity manifests in the form of beautiful, atmospheric watercolours, bringing viewers in, and heightening their connection with the world.
Making that connection, and sharing it by teaching his craft to interested students - encouraging both the passion and technical know-how - keeps Joe’s artistic world turning.
